Alert and order are not the same
An evacuation alert means be ready to leave; an evacuation order means leave as directed by authorities. Follow instructions from your First Nation or local government and use official BC emergency information. Insurance response can depend on whether access is prohibited by civil authority, the reason for the evacuation and the wording of your policy.
Additional Living Expenses may help
Many home and tenant policies may cover eligible additional living expenses during a covered evacuation, subject to policy terms, limits and time periods. This can include the reasonable increase in costs needed to maintain a comparable standard of living—not every expense incurred while away from home.
Contact the insurer and keep receipts
Notify your broker or insurer promptly, ask what expenses are eligible and whether approval is required, and keep itemized receipts. Record dates, names and claim instructions. If insurance is unavailable or immediate basic needs cannot be met, BC Emergency Support Services may provide short-term assistance to eligible evacuees.
Prepare before you have to leave
Keep policy and contact details available, photograph rooms and valuable items, back up important documents, prepare medication and an emergency kit, and follow official alerts. Do not delay an evacuation to collect property. Coverage questions can be addressed after everyone is safe.
