Safety comes first
Call emergency services when needed and do not enter an unsafe building. Take reasonable steps to prevent further damage only when it is safe—for example, shutting off water or arranging emergency board-up service. Do not put yourself at risk to save property.
Report the loss promptly
Contact your broker or insurer as soon as reasonably possible and provide a factual description of what happened. Ask for the claim number, adjuster’s contact information, deductible and instructions before authorizing non-emergency repairs. Reporting a loss does not by itself confirm that coverage applies.
Photograph, list and preserve
Take wide and close-up photographs or video before moving items when safe. Begin a list of damaged property and collect receipts, warranties, manuals, credit-card statements or earlier photographs that may help establish ownership and value. Keep damaged items unless they are hazardous or the insurer authorizes disposal.
Track every necessary expense
If the home cannot be occupied, ask whether Additional Living Expense coverage may apply and what limits, time periods or approvals are involved. Keep itemized receipts for reasonable additional costs such as temporary accommodation, meals, transportation, emergency supplies and pet boarding. Normal household expenses may not be reimbursable.
